Police and bulldozers have come to Skhoma Butchery unannounced and are proceeding, as we speak, to illegally destroy the Butchery.
All this is happening despite a court settlement between the butchery and owners of the new Gugulethu Square Mall. The landowner, West Side (who received the land through a corrupt deal with the non-profit Kula Business (see this M&G article), was ordered by the court to satisfy 5 requirements before the eviction would be allowed to proceed.
Besides being required to pay the costs of relocation and offer reduced rentals on the new mall premises, the main requirement of the settlement is that Skhoma Butchery is offered a suitable alternative premises whereby it could conduct its business. However the place that has been offered to them by West Side is clearly unsuitable – there are no toilets nor is there a braai area for customers. These two factors are essential to Skhoma’s ability to attract and cater for its customers.
This kind of thing happens everyday in South Africa where politically connected and wealthy people are permitted to break the law and evict people illegally.
The owners of the butchery with the support of the Anti-Eviction Campaign will oppose the eviction as it blatantly violates the recent High Court order.
