Traders Association meeting at 12h30 tomorrow, May 26, 2009 at the Southern Terminal Interchange in Mitchells Plain Contact: Mischka 0731286657
The legitimate trading organization of the Mitchells Plain hawkers will be attending a meeting tomorrow with officials from the Urban Renewal Department with regard to trading issues in Mitchell’s Plain.
At the last meeting on April 20, 2009, the officials from the department promised they would be transparent in any decisions they made regarding the process of restructuring the trading area and the traders in Mitchells Plain. At this point in time, the officials have allocated only half the traders with bays in the renovation process and half have been left without bays. During the reallocation process, the officials have not involved the traders in any decisions and there has been no participation requested of the traders regardless of the promises made on April 20th that all would be informed and included in decisions. The restructuring of the trading space in Mitchells Plain has not been beneficial to everyone and the officials lied about the process and are going ahead with the changes without any insight from the traders themselves. By only allocating bays for half of the traders, it is apparent that the Department of Urban Renewal is working to remove the organizing power from the traders and minimize, as well as eventually eliminate, informal trading altogether.
The meeting will take place at 12h30 tomorrow, May 26, 2009 at the Southern Terminal Interchange in Mitchells Plain.
